Alpinestars recently introduced their Tech-Air 5 airbag vest at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. This vest was redesigned to be compatible with any motorcycle jacket, different from previous versions of the vest that was only compatible with Alpinestars jackets and suits. The Alpinestars Tech-Air 5 is an electronic, self-contained, wearable airbag vest that contains integrated sensors that we will go over. Alpinestars conducted many tests over many years and thousands of test crashes and they have now finally designed their crash detection algorithms to be highly refined. We’ll go over what you need to know about the all-new and redesigned Alpinestars Tech-Air 5 airbag vest!
Airbag System:

There are six sensors in the vest’s Tech-Air system – three gyroscopes and three accelerometers – which put information into a crash algorithm that decides whether to deploy the airbag. The Alpinestars Tech-Air 5 offers a large area of protection when its airbag is inflated, covering the rider’s shoulders, chest, ribs, and full back. Alpinestars says that the Tech-Air 5 vest provides the most comprehensive coverage of any airbag currently available. According to testing done by SGS (an official CE certification company), the Tech-Air 5 airbag offers the same impact dampening as what is provided by 18 back protectors, which is impressive. The key to this safety system is that it can identify a crash event and deploy the airbag within 20-40 ms.
Air-Tech App:

This Airbag Vest comes with a unique app that connects via Bluetooth. The app is not needed for the vest to operate but it does offer many useful features. Features like operational status information, detailed analysis of your rides, and easy firmware updates to the vest. It also offers a very reassuring feature of sending an automatic text to your emergency contact in the case of a crash. That is a well thought out feature for those riders who decide to head out on a lone ride.
Race and Street Versions:

The Tech-Air 5 airbag vest is NOT for off-roading. Alpinestars is working to develop an airbag system for off-road riders and racers. Currently, it is designed for use on the road or the track. It can be used for adventure riders but not adventure riders who take their bikes onto adventurous off-road terrain. The reason this airbag vest cannot be used off-road is that the electronics are calibrated for on-road use and it could potentially deploy the airbag if it felt the big riding impacts that occur when riding over rough terrain.
Who it’s made for:

As we mentioned before, this vest is specifically designed for those who ride on the street or race tracks. So whether you are a daily commuter or a devoted racer, this vest is for you. Its purpose is to offer protection for motorcyclists. Since it was redesigned to fit any textile or leather jacket, you won’t need to purchase a completely different jacket, which is more inviting to those riders who already have their gear. Keeping in mind that the jacket must be large enough to accommodate the expansion of the airbag in the event of a crash.
Pricing, Availability, and More:

This airbag vest is set at $699.95, which is the same price as its direct completion, the Dainese system. Alpinestar has set the retail availability date for March 2020, which means they will be available soon enough for riders to get their hands on.
Using the system is also extremely easy, just zip up the vest and close the magnetic flap and you’re ready to ride. An LED display indicates the airbag’s operational status and the integrated, certified lithium-ion battery has a battery life of 30 hours of riding time. The system comes equipped with a magnetic micro USB charger that allows quick, easy and convenient recharging. There are also two different vests for men and women to ensure a comfortable fitment.
Conclusion:
The thought of this technology being accessible to riders is such an important and impressive milestone in the motorcycle industry. The torso airbag system for motorcyclists is not a new concept. Alpinestars launched the first Tech-Air back in 2014, and now at least four other companies have airbag systems on the market. It is impressive and great to see this company advancing and improving their system to stay on top of the market and bring the greatest and latest.
