The Sea-Doo XP single-handedly changed the watercraft world back in the 90’s. It was the first high-performance version of a sit-down ski and no one else had one like it. There had already been Sea-Doo watercraft around but the more “modern” and high-speed watercraft that we know and love today originate from the XP model. This model was one of the latest and greatest skis that it was named Watercraft of the century by Watercraft World Magazine. From that moment on the watercraft world progressed into better and better. This ski is still considered one of the best skis around!

Let’s go over and appreciate the advancements in each generation.

First Generation (1991-92):

A little bit of background on the Sea-Doo XP, it was originally an upgrade to the SP two-passenger model. The engine was upgraded with dual carburetors and a tuned exhaust pipe. The jet pump featured a stainless steel impeller. The XP also featured rear view mirrors that were incorporated into the hood design and a 587 yellow engine. And lastly, this ski could reach speeds up to 44-46mph which was the fastest speeds at that time!

Second Generation (1993-94):

The second generation XP model was based on the SP hull. It included 650cc Rotax engine with dual carburetors and a tuned exhaust pipe, and a variable trim nozzle was added to the jet pump. Colors from the previous model changed a bit as it has red accents and it also, not only still had mirrors but now adjustable mirrors to the cowling. There was an increase of 5 horsepower due to some changes on the 650cc motor.

Third Generation (1995-96):

Way bigger changes came to this generation of skis. The hull was extended in the rear of the ski and narrowed at the bow. Sea-Doo also added sponsons to both sides of the stern. Removable trim tables were at the end of the rear which to is shimmed to however the owner desired. A 4-inch long pomp spacer was added in front of the pump, which added to the top speed the ski could go but did not help the performance because up took extra time to dill the increased volume with water once the pump came unhooked. The engine was also increased from 650cc to 750cc with an 85hp! Sea-doo decides to change up the colors a bit on this one to yellow and purple.

Additionally, Sea-Doo released an XP800 model that had a 110hp enhance and could reach up to 59mph!

Perfecting The XP (1997-2004):

This new generation was specifically made for a “lean in” style of riding. And to help this style of riding Sea-Doo adjusted the positioning of the seat, calling it “Direct Action Suspension”. It was a raised seat mounted on a pivot and had shock absorbers at the opposite ends. This ski was 90lbs heavier than the previous years which affected the acceleration but added 1mph to the overall top speed.
Then the 1998 ski was lightened up again with the XP limited model with a 951cc engine and 130hp reaching 60mph!
Over the next few years, there are only minor graphics changes until the “limited” tag was released in 2003-2004. Sea-Doo added orbital direct fuel injection which just improved the whole ski! Better fuel economy, performance, and even emissions!!

Revolutionizing The Watercraft World!

As you can clearly tell, Sea-Doo really changed the watercraft industry in just a matter of a few years. Most of their skis won awards for their advancements and we can again, appreciate why. There were so many upgrades and other things done to these skis each time, really revolutionizing what watercraft are now.  We owe the XP model for what our watercraft are today. And many people continue to enjoy and pass the time by on these amazing watercrafts today!
