Are You Ready for a Jump?

Before even considering hitting a jump you need to be honest with yourself and make sure you are ready to master one. Having the proper techniques down for riding your dirt bike in general, come first, you don’t want to become discouraged from riding due to not having enough experience on the dirt bike. And if you are a more experienced rider you definitely want to make sure you have that extra confidence! Lack of confidence could have a negative result in your overall jumping performance. It is okay to begin on a smaller jump, then work your way up. Whatever it takes because practice makes perfect!

Body Position:

As you prepare to hit a jump there are a couple of very crucial body positions you want to quickly run through your head. First, you should be standing not sitting. Sitting can result in being unprepared for your landing—not good. Your upper body should be at a 45-degree angle with your hips, as always your knees should be squeezing your bike and feet will be facing forward. And your overall position on the bike when first learning should be very neutral, do not be too far forward nor too far back. A little uneven weight distribution could have a very big effect. Too far back is also known as “looping out” and that usually ends with you on your back, ouch!

Throttle Delivery:

When first learning to jump you want to be as smooth as possible with your throttle. Choose a steady pace that you feel comfortable with. Once you have found that pace hold it all the way through the top of the take-off. Do not let go of the throttle too early or twist it too quickly. The key point is just never be too aggressive with the throttle when first learning as that can also throw your body position out of balance, both throttle delivery and body position need to be in sync to be smooth.

Your Landing:

After going through and having the courage to hit your jump it’s time to land. Key points to go over that we’ve discussed before: don’t forget to continue to squeeze the bike with your knees while it’s in the air and as well as when you’ve landed. Knowing which tire to land on is always important to think about also. We recommend doing your best to evenly distribute your landing onto both tires at the same time. Match the level of your landing area, typically when landing on flat ground you will land a little more on the back tire. Every landing is different but a good rule of thumb is to try to evenly distribute your landing, do not be too far forward or too far back causing you to become unstable.

Practice! Practice! Practice!

Keep trying until you master the jump or at least get one good one in. Once you’ve felt the satisfaction of successfully hitting a jump you will only get better from that moment on. Start off simple and eventually you’ll find the right amount of speed and distance to get the perfect jump in every single time.

Ready, Set, Jump!

With much effort, confidence and determination mastering a jump should come to you in no time! Keeping these useful tips in mind will get you on the sweet, sweet path to success and you’ll forget what it was like to not know how to properly jump. To reiterate, keep your skill level in mind—don’t get ahead of yourself if you’re not there yet. Body position is crucial, know where and how to be on your bike. Be aware of how to properly control your throttle. Stand up and be strong when landing and lastly take everything you’re learning and practice until you can’t anymore!
