The Thanksgiving Holiday Weekend is undoubtedly the busiest travel time of the year and this year will be no different. The deserts in California are usually pretty quiet but on Thanksgiving weekend thousands and thousands of off-road enthusiasts make the “pilgrimage” to some local and not so local off-road destinations to spend time in the dirt or sand with friends and family. The destinations below are some of our favorite holiday spots!

Glamis:

Off-roading and camping this turkey day is a way of life for many off-road enthusiasts and what better place to celebrate Thanksgiving than at the #1 dune destination in the world: Glamis Imperial Sand Dunes! Glamis is the largest off-highway vehicle recreation area for sand dunes in the United States as there is golden sand as far as the eye can see. For those who enjoy hitting up the dunes with thousands of fellow enthusiast than Glamis is the perfect place for you. Over 150-200 thousand people are expected to hit the Glamis dunes over this long Thanksgiving weekend so be prepared for some busy spots such as “olds” and vendor row. This means you can completely unleash the adventurous spirit in your blood through your off-road vehicle. Jumps. Races. Airing it out. You can do it all here.

Johnson Valley:

Johnson Valley is another excellent place to spend the Thanksgiving holiday with family and friends. It provides an open desert, dry lake beds, some sand dunes and extreme rock crawling trails all within a handful of miles of each other. This place is great for long weekends because it offers any riding style and all skill levels the opportunity to ride every kind of terrain. Johnson Valley is a great destination for families because it has a large camping space and a bit mellower crowd than say Glamis lol. No matter what you like to ride this place has something for everyone this holiday weekend.

Ocotillo Wells:

Riding in Ocotillo Wells is a dirt junkies wonderland! With over 85,000 acres of desert for off-road exploration from shale hill climbs to winding washes to handlebar wide canyons there is no wonder why more than 60,000 off-road enthusiasts descend upon this area to celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday with family and friends. There is an endless parade of campers and off-road vehicles that fill the large landscape, all in the quest for extreme fun and food in the desert. Ocotillo Wells is wide open, it's free, and it's lots of fun!

Glamis North:

One place that is getting extremely popular for off-road enthusiasts is Glamis North. The Glamis North Hot Springs Resort provides a family-friendly atmosphere and off-road experience that you are guaranteed to love this Thanksgiving weekend. While there you will find a fun campground with great cabins and perhaps the largest RV sites in the country. Every site is big-rig friendly, and they offer a resort atmosphere where fun and relaxation rule each day. While there you can ride across hundreds of miles of desert trails, soak in their mineral hot springs, enjoy dining at Sassy’s Outback Cafe or just check out the gifts, brews, and supplies in their store. Glamis North is the best of both worlds this Thanksgiving Holiday!

Stoddard Wells:

Located in the Mojave Desert of Southern California, Stoddard Valley OHV Recreation Area offers a diverse landscape for off-highway vehicles. With 53,000 acres of open land, this area is perfect for an off-road enthusiast to camp out and ride. Known for its chunky and steep mountains, rolling hills, open valleys, and winding sandy washes, Stoddard Wells is a great place to be at this Thanksgiving weekend. There are no fees to camp here. This is a rarity these days so enjoy and take advantage of it. Thanksgiving is a time to spend with family and friends, so what better way to spend it than off-roading.
