Berts Mega Mall | Powersports Hub

Most people know Barstow, CA as a halfway stop from LA to Vegas or vice versa. Those who are off-road enthusiast know it is much more than that. There are many things you can find to do here if you are into the off-roading and desert scene. Not only are there off-roading activities, but also places where you must stop by to grab a bite or hang out with others who share the same interest with you. This city is right by several major highways like Interstate 15, California State Route 58, and the world famous Route 66.

Go Get Breakfast at Black Bears Diner:

Located right off of Interstate 15 a stop for breakfast at Black Bears Diner is a definite must. If you are driving to your favorite camping spot or maybe up early because you are headed home this is the perfect spot because it is conveniently located right off the ramp. They’re also known for their large portion sizes which will also be perfect when you need the energy for a full day of off-roading!

Climb Ord Mountain:

The Ord Mountain Trails were created to provide drivers with a link between Stoddard Valley and Johnson Valley OHV area. These mountains are best known for their unpaved mountain roads that are geared for more experienced off-roaders. They reach a high point of 6,309 feet and is the 36th highest peak in California. Expect very steep trails but once you reach the top of the mountain enjoy an amazing view of the San Bernardino Mountains (which are snowcapped depending on the time of year you go) and a view of Tyler Valley. We recommend bringing at least one spare, just in case!

Take a Ride to Slash X:

Slash X Ranch Café is a café that plays a large role in the off-roading community in the “High Desert”. It is family owned and operated and has a 60-year history. They’re very involved in the sport of off-roading and even participate and hold off-roading events. Off-roaders head to this storied joint in a funky Old West-style ranch for burgers, beer & outdoor seats. If you are in the high desert then you have to stop by here and check out the vibe. This is definitely one of the most welcoming spots for off-roaders of all types- ATV riders, 4X4, dirt bike riders, etc.

Barstow Del Taco:

The Barstow Del Taco is a traditional stop for the off-roading community and Socal residents. This is the oldest standing Del Taco in the history of Del Taco Restaurants. Those who have had the chance to visit this Del Taco will say it is not your average Del Taco, also describing it with words like phenomenal and legendary. The portion sizes of the food are bigger than usual and they offer exclusive menu items that you can only get at this location. You can even ride you SXS or dirt bikes to this Del Taco because it is surrounded by OHV areas. This is a must!!

Rainbow Basin Natural Area:

The Rainbow Basin Natural Area is a very easy to reach roadway with little grass, a small Joshua or two and the dried remains of desert wildflowers. On the top of the canyon walls, however, stand many Joshua’s, sentinels guarding the mountain. It a scenic drive and does not require 4X4. Thus Basin Area also allows camping in the Owl Canyon Campground. It is a very mellow and smaller version of the desert experience.

Castle Mountains National Monument:

Just recently designated as a national monument in 2016, Castle Mountains National Monument is worth a visit. At the mountains’ feet lie some of the Mojave Desert’s best grasslands, plus forests of twisted junipers and Joshua trees, a type of yucca. Roaming and some soaring around it all are desert bighorn sheep, golden eagles, mountain lions, coyotes, and bobcats. If you visit around the springtime when rain has come over you can view the blanket of wildflower that bloom. The park can only be accessed through dirt road so we recommend high clearances, 4X4 vehicles.

Philips Loop Trail:

This is a moderate trail for those who would like to participate in some off-roading. It is perfect for your 4x4, dirt bike,  SXS or ATV. The trail is a bit narrow with only a single vehicle width. IF you want a bit of a challenge then this trail is for you. Not to mention the views of red rock canyons, sandstone canyons, natural stone arches, and old silver mines. It is a six-mile long trail and can take anywhere from 1-2 hours to get through. It’s also located right by Calico, so right after you are done you can explore Calico Ghost Town!

Calico Ghost Town:

Calico has a very interesting story behind it making it a worthwhile stop and visit. It was an old mining town that has been around since 1881, the business was booming for this small town as they produced over $20million in silver over a 10+ year span. Eventually silver lost its value and miners that once lived here, packed up their things and abandoned the town. Hence giving it, its name—Calico Ghost Town. The city has since been architecturally restored and also became a State Historical Landmark. Now, it is a part of the San Bernardino County Regional Parks system and visitors have an opportunity to learn about its history and enjoy the natural beauty of the surrounding desert environment. Calico also has restaurants, shops and camping/outdoor recreational areas!

Soggy Dry Lake Bed:

This dry lake bed is a perfect place and terrain for beginning SXS, ATV or dirt bike riders. The openness and flatness of this area are perfect because you or the learner will have a lot of space and feel the ease of not running into anything. It will also prevent the learner from getting lost and being unable to return to camp. Do keep in mind this is only the case if many other riders are not out also. You should always be aware of your surrounding and also mind those around you. Because it is so flat, it may get windy at times. If you have a large group of other campers out with you it is recommended you all group together to lessen the strain of the wind.

Grange Motor Circuit:

Grange Motor Circuit is a multi-use track. They welcome go-kart, supermoto, road race riders, and drift drivers to come and practice. They also provide private track rentals and testing. Even if you are not participating in these activities you can always watch others practice. On some days they do conduct races and can be very entertaining if you are going to have your family tag along and watch.
