Being the passenger on a motorcycle can both exciting and intimidating at the same time. When you climb on the back of a motorcycle you are literally putting your life in the hands of the driver. Before you decide to hop on the back of a motorcycle it is a good idea to educate yourself on how to be safe and comfortable as a passenger.

Here are a couple of tips on how to ensure an epic ride for both the driver and passenger.

Wear Protective Gear:

Although you are not the person driving, you must wear full protective gear when riding passenger on a bike. In the case of an accident, the passenger and the rider are put on the same risk for injury. A passenger should wear a DOT-certified helmet (preferably full-faced), eye protection, sturdy pants and jacket, full-coverage footwear, and gloves. Having the appropriate gear to ride will keep you safe from heat, cold, road debris and bugs when riding on the back of a motorcycle.

Hang On:

When you are a passenger on a motorcycle, it is important to know WHERE to hold on. Do not hang on to your riders arms because it will throw off the bike’s stability. Instead, make sure that you put your arms around the rider’s waist and hold on tight. If the bike has grab handles, you can hold on to those during the ride as well. Be sure to hang on tight to your rider because you do not want to be slamming into them every time they hit the brakes or feel like you are going to fall off the bike when they accelerate.

Bonus Tip: If you cannot reach all the way around your riders waist, suggest to your rider to invest in a wearable set of grab handles.

Feet Placement:

When riding as a passenger, make sure you sit still and keep your feet on the pegs at all times. Many passengers believe they are helping the rider support the bike by putting their feet down, but that is not the case. Instead, you are causing the rider to lose their balance and potentially cause an accident. The foot pegs will make your ride a lot more safe and comfortable.

Bonus Tip: Make sure the motorcycle has foot pegs for the passenger before you decide to go for a ride.

Lean with the Driver: When the bike is in motion, the passenger needs to make sure they are leaning with the ride and looking over their inside shoulder. Your body position will influence steering and lean angle, so what you do will affect the rider's control of the bike. Do not get startled when the bike begins to lean into a turn, it is supposed to do that. You should also lean into the turn with the bike, but not too much because you do not want to fall off or bring the bike down.

Conclusion:
Riding in the back of a motorcycle is a fun and thrilling ride that everyone should experience, but it is important to be educated on the do's and don'ts of being a motorcycle passenger so that you will be comfortable and safe throughout the entire ride. Make sure you wear the appropriate motorcycle gear, place your hands and feet in the correct spots, and learn to lean with the bike when it is in motion so that you and the rider are safe and comfortable. Once you follow these guidelines, you will be ready to hit the streets and enjoy the ride.
