Worst Customizations on a UTV

One of the greatest parts about owning a UTV is experiencing the freedom of the outdoors plus the exhilaration of conquering various terrain, but owning a UTV is not always about the experience. One of the best parts of UTV riding is customizing your vehicle and truly making it “your” machine. There are endless things you can do to customize your UTV and transform it into something that is uniquely suited for you and making your off-road adventure even more enjoyable. With the endless number of ways to customize your UTV, we have seen some that are not so great because they can be a safety hazard. Here is our list of some of the WORST customizations you can do to your UTV.

Making a Two-Seater Into a Four-Seater:

Trying to make a 2 seater UTV into a 4 seater is one of the most unsafe customizations you can make to your vehicle because a two-seater UTV is not structurally designed to carry four passengers. Now don't get us wrong as back in the “Rhino” days this was a common upgrade as there was a bed that you could bolt a bench into....not so much on the current 2 seaters! Adding the additional seats to haul more passengers can definitely put you and your passengers at risk of injury because the additional weight added to the car can throw the center of gravity off and cause the unit to flip backward. The best thing you can do is buy the correct vehicle and know that you and your passengers are safe while cruising around.

Cutting the Cage off and Not Replacing

Making your UTV into a convertible is a BAD idea. The cage is there for a reason: to protect you and your passengers. If the cage is cut, you will have absolutely no protection in case of an accident and the cage is part of the structure so it is going to wobble around like a noodle. If you cut off your cage, replace it with another one before taking out your vehicle for a ride. The more protection you can have on your vehicle, the better.

Putting Wheel Spacers Beyond 2”:

When riders do lifts, their vehicle narrows so they do spacers to widen it back up. Also when someone adds a paddle/rim set up, the rims are usually wider so a spacer will take up that space. If you are going to add wheel spacers to your UTV, putting some beyond 2” is NEVER a good idea. The wheel spacers not only put a lot more radial load on the bearing but they also drastically affect the steering. They tend to stress and break components if you are jumping a lot since that extra width adds leverage. This problem makes it harder to corner and when they are installed on the front wheels, the wheels run in an arc.

Speaker Pods Outside of the Cage:

Many might think it is a good idea to install their speaker pods outside of the cage but doing so can damage your unit and your speakers. Your UTV is going to be riding through mud, sand, trees and many other surfaces that can cause your unit to flip over causing serious damage to anything outside of your vehicle and even something like snagging a branch with a speaker pod will ruin your day. It is best to keep everything inside the ride at all times for maximum protection.

“Slamming” the Suspension or Cage

When riding your UTV, you want the factory travel and you want to be able to see. The sight lines with a factory cage are just about perfect so one thing you do not want to do is diminish what you can see. On average UTV suspension is from 17” to 24” so use that travel, don't compress it or make your UTV closer to the ground. Owning a UTV is one of the greatest experiences in the world because you can not only have endless fun riding it but also customizing it to make it your own. Although the list of customizations is endless for a UTV, the safety of you and your family is the number one priority. Make sure all the customizations you are making will keep you all safe before deciding change up your UTV.
